Did You Know?

Similar to the Arts and Crafts movements, the pan-Slavic/Neo-Russian style turned to earlier handicraft traditions for inspiration.

Description

One of the most revered icons in the Russian Orthodox church, Our Lady of Kazan represents the Virgin Mary as the patroness of the city of Kazan and the Holy Protectress of Russia. Fabergé embellished this icon with cloisonné (partitioned) enamel in a striking palette, as well as beaded ornaments and spiral motifs in the pan-Slavic/Neo-Russian style.
A silver and enamel pendant icon features a central painting of the Virgin Mary and the baby Christ, both with light skin tones and gold halos. Mary wears a dark-red robe, her head tilted toward Christ, who stands in gold. The surrounding frame displays intricate purple, blue, and white enamel patterns with small beads. Cyrillic text at the bottom reads "КАЗАНСКIЯ ПРЕСВ. БЦИ," and a silver loop crowns the frame.
