Before becoming a ceramist, Seifū Yohei III briefly trained with painter Tanomura Chokunyū (1814–1907). He learned to paint ink compositions in an abstracted, calligraphic way associated with well-read people who made paintings for their own amusement and as gifts for friends. Such works might be exchanged or even made at gatherings where attendees enjoyed sencha, or steeped leaf tea. This scroll shows a Buddhist temple tucked into the forest in a mountain valley.
