Sheffield Harold Kagy

(American, 1907-1989)

Linoleum cut

Image: 24.8 x 22.3 cm (9 3/4 x 8 3/4 in.)

Created by the Federal Art Project, Works Progress Administration and lent by the Fine Arts Collection of the U.S. General Services Administration 3976.1942

Born and raised in Cleveland, Kagy was a prolific
printmaker who specialized in block prints of
contemporary life. Like many Cleveland artists,
Kagy did not wholeheartedly adopt modernism,
though he was familiar with the various trends of
the time and worked in several different styles
simultaneously. This linoleum cut departs from
Kagy’s typically realist style and socially engaged
subjects to focus on the dynamic representation of
a man reacting to music.
