As an influential member of a group of artists who employed appropriation in the late 1970s called the Pictures Generation, Goldstein began making large-scale paintings around 1980. Although his practice is often connected to Roland Barthes’s notion of the “death of the author,” in his early paintings he developed highly suggestive narratives through the juxtaposition of found images: “I’m interested in the gap between Minimalism and Pop Art: the objectness and autonomy of Minimalism and the subject matter from our culture that’s in Pop Art. But there’s also a link to Conceptual Art . . . a lot of the experiences take place in your head.”
