Description

This work is attributed to Yoon Soon, who served in high government positions including Minister of the Board of Rites, a royal department of state. During his lifetime, he also enjoyed a high reputation as a versatile calligrapher excelling in many different types of scripts. In this hanging scroll, he employed a wild cursive script. This style stresses the calligrapher’s physical performance—manipulating brush tips, abbreviating or linking several strokes into one or two major movements, and undulating circular gestures. Through his brushwork, this experienced scholar-artist expresses full-fledged freedom earned in his retirement.
