Exhibition Opening: Clarence H. White and His World: The Art and Craft of Photography, 1895–1925

A leading figure of American Pictorialist photography, Ohio-born Clarence H. White was an influential teacher and a gifted artist celebrated for his beautiful scenes of quiet domesticity and outdoor idylls. This exhibition surveys White’s career from its beginnings in 1895 in Newark, Ohio, to his death in Mexico in 1925.

Julius Fund Lecture in Medieval Art: The Subversive Afterlife of Images: Implied, Ensuing Action in Medieval Jewish Visual Culture

For any work of art, the view of the object at rest is a snapshot of the extant state of theological and political affairs surrounding the given image. Hear Marc Michael Epstein, professor of religion and visual culture on the Mattie M. Paschall Davis and Norman Davis Chair at Vassar College discuss his work-in-progress, People of the Image: Jews & Art, scheduled for release next year. Free; no reservation required. This lecture is hosted by the Department of Art History and Art at Case Western Reserve University and cosponsored by the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Kerry James Marshall: Works on Paper

Over the past 35 years, Marshall has created groundbreaking and widely acclaimed work that challenges art historical traditions by representing narratives composed entirely of African American figures. A monumental woodcut anchors the exhibition, which also features a selection of smaller drawings. Read the Plain Dealer review.
