Michelangelo’s sculptures, paintings, drawings, and architectural projects have been admired for more than 500 years. In fall 2019, a major international exhibition of Michelangelo’s drawings will be on display at the CMA. Held in conjunction with a course in the CMA’s joint program with CWRU, two lectures explore how Michelangelo’s legacy shaped drawing practices in Italy. At 11:00 a.m., Julian Brooks, senior curator and head of the Department of Drawings at the J. Paul Getty Museum, explores artistic workshop practices in Florence during Michelangelo’s time, including the founding of the first art academy, the Accademia del Disegno. At 2:00 p.m., John Marciari, Charles W. Engelhard Curator and head of the Department of Drawings and Prints at the Morgan Library & Museum, discusses the functions of the many surviving drawings after Michelangelo’s sculptures made by artists living and working in Venice during the 1500s.
