About The Event
We invite you to the Community Arts Center for free art making, exploring world-building and the importance of daily rituals! Inspired by the work of Dexter Davis and in celebration of Black History Month, participants are invited to make their own collage and piece together portraits of loved ones. Through this collage project, guests are encouraged to reflect and create portraits or self-portraits that represent cherished family traditions and memories. This program is open to people of all ages and artistic abilities. All materials are provided and are nontoxic.
Davis is a multidisciplinary artist born in 1965 who lives and works in Cleveland. He received his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art, and his work is found in the collections of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Progressive Corporation. He has completed residencies with Zygote Press (Cleveland) and the Experimental Printmaking Institute, Lafayette College (Easton, PA). His work has also been featured in Cleveland at the William Busta Gallery and CACP Gallery.
Davis is known for his dynamic mixed-media pieces, layering collage-based works with combined fragments and hand-carved woodblock prints. Recycling everything around him into something new, Davis gives new meaning to everyday objects. Through a series of traumatic experiences, Davis has found safety in creating art to tell his story. His appreciation of ritual as a form to heal and experiment has played a huge role in his artistic practice.
