About The Event

Join us for a unique class and dining experience in celebration of the special exhibition Epic of the Northwest Himalayas: Pahari Paintings from the “‘Shangri’ Ramayana.” Inspired by the alpine kingdoms where the paintings were made and descriptions of feasts for gods and demons in India’s ancient epic, this class explores the cuisine of the Pahari region, as well as the food of Rama’s world.

This educational and delicious program is held in the museum’s banquet room and led by Sonya Rhie Mace, George P. Bickford Curator of Indian and Southeast Asian Art, and celebrated chef Doug Katz.

Sonya explains the pivotal role of food in the adventures of Rama. Doug prepares vegetarian fare inspired by Himachali Dhaam—a Pahari feast traditionally prepared by hereditary priest-chefs—and dishes the demons would enjoy, involving meat and spirits, as described in the Ramayana.

Participants may choose between a vegetarian or a vegetarian-meat combination dinner. The dinner also includes dessert and drinks paired with the courses (alcoholic and nonalcoholic options are available).

Please note, the menu includes dairy and gluten (for both ticket options), as well as meat (for the combination ticket option).
