Violette Heymann, 1910. Odilon Redon (French, 1840–1916). Pastel; 72 x 92 cm. The Cleveland Museum of Art, Hinman B. Hurlbut Collection, 1926.1976

About The Event

The CMA was among the earliest American museums to collect works by Odilon Redon. Beginning nearly a century ago, in 1925, the institution’s early supporters made landmark donations of artworks by Redon, earning the CMA an international reputation as the most important repository of works by the artist outside France. The museum continues to augment its remarkable collection to this day.

The exhibition Collecting Dreams: Odilon Redon celebrates the CMA’s exceptional holdings. In this program exclusively for Legacy Society members, associate curator of prints and drawings Britany Salsbury discusses Collecting Dreams, and director of the Ingalls Library and Museum Archives Leslie Cade looks back at the CMA’s 1926 exhibition of the artist’s work.

The exhibition will be open for self-guided gallery visits following the presentation in Gartner Auditorium. To assist with health considerations, this year we plan to provide each guest with a gourmet boxed lunch. Guests will be able to sit in the museum’s spacious restaurant banquet room or take the boxed lunch to go after visiting the galleries.

Legacy Society members will receive a digital invitation.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is widely considered one of the best encyclopedic art museums in the world. Its world-renowned collection would not have been possible without the foresight and philanthropy of our founders, John Huntington, Hinman B. Hurlbut, Horace Kelley, and Jeptha H. Wade II. Nearly 100 years later, their vision of creating a museum “for the benefit of all the people forever” continues and has paved the way for others to leave a similar legacy. To honor this continued generosity of the community, the museum created the Legacy Society—a group of nearly 400 individuals who have chosen to support the museum by making a commitment to the museum in their will or estate plans. All exhibitions at the Cleveland Museum of Art are underwritten by the CMA Fund for Exhibitions. Generous annual support is provided by Mr. and Mrs. Walter R. Chapman Jr., the Jeffery Wallace Ellis Trust in memory of Lloyd H. Ellis Jr., Janice Hammond and Edward Hemmelgarn, Eva and Rudolf Linnebach, William S. and Margaret F. Lipscomb, Tim O’Brien and Breck Platner, Anne H. Weil, and the Womens Council of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
