Garth Knox
“Outstandingly magical! From the very first notes one is totally captivated by the fantastic richness of the sound produced by the combination of viola d’amore and the cello.” –Gramophone
One of the most versatile and adventurous viola virtuosos of our time, Garth Knox is an Irish-born, Scottish-raised string player. A recent fascination with the baroque-period instrument the viola d’amore (with its seven playing strings and seven sympathetic strings) led the creation of a program that—though historically informed—is rooted in the spirit of innovation and discovery. This delightful program is a mix of music of the 17th & 18th centuries, traditional Celtic reels and jigs, and new works, including Knox’s arrangements with cello. Cleveland debut. $29, CMA members $28.
These programs made possible in part by the Ernest L. and Louise M. Gartner Fund, the P. J. McMyler Musical Endowment Fund, and the Anton and Rose Zverina Music Fund. Additional support has been provided by the Musart Society and the John P. Murphy Foundation. Media sponsors are WVIZ/PBS and 90.3 WCPN ideastream and WCLV 104.9 Classical FM.
