About The Event

Come hear Iyonnah Washington speak about her project and experience as a Toni M. and Donald S. Scherzer Teen Intern. Her finished project will be on display for visitors to see, and she will be present to ask questions.

Each year, the director of the Cleveland Museum of Art opens Parade the Circle along with other civic leaders in a costumed or adorned group known as the Director’s Ensemble. For the very first time, the Toni M. and Donald S. Scherzer Teen Intern created these adornments in collaboration with Parade artists and the broader community. Join us in celebrating her work, and hear about her creative process on creating with community.

Parade the Circle, which was founded by the CMA in 1990 with a small number of artists, has since grown to become a beloved large-scale event, drawing crowds in the tens of thousands every June. Families, neighbors, community groups, churches, artists, performers—everyone is welcome to express their creativity, show their talent, and celebrate the arts. We appreciate Iyonnah and all others who come to the Parade excited to learn and collaborate!

Iyonnah Washington is a junior at the Cleveland School of the Arts where she participates in Arts Alive, the school’s collaborative visual arts, music, and movement program featuring large-scale puppets and costumes. In addition to this internship she recently completed the CMA’s Currently Under Curation fellowship—an advanced-level program where teens work together as fellows to curate and create art exhibitions and projects.
