Although American artist Andrew Wyeth is remembered today for his evocative and precisely rendered tempera paintings, watercolor was the medium that established his reputation beginning in the 1930s. On the occasion of Spectacular Freedom: Andrew Wyeth and the Modern American Watercolor—the first in-depth exploration of this important part of Wyeth’s career—exhibition curator Britany Salsbury is joined by William L. Coleman, director of the Wyeth Study Center and Wyeth Foundation curator, for a conversation about Wyeth’s lifelong fascination with watercolor and his place within the history of this medium in the United States.
