Scabbard
before 1916
Location: Not on view
Did You Know?
The scabbard’s minimalism suggests either an earlier form or a piece intended for practical use.Description
This is the upper section of a kalis scabbard, carved from a single block of hardwood. The carved walls follow the classic okir-inflected contouring, though the decoration is restrained. A single vertical motif—likely a simplified dapun (leaf) element—is incised along the center line, with the rest of the surface left plain.- ?–1916Mr. Jeptha Homer Wade II [1857–1926], Cleveland, OH, given to the Cleveland Museum of Art1916–The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH
