A horizontally oriented etching in black ink on light paper depicts a reclining child. Facing us with wide eyes and a set mouth, the child lies across the composition. Their hair is a tangled mass of fine lines, and loose clothing is defined by dark, sketchy hatching. Feet extend toward our left, while a hand rests at our right. Sparse, horizontal lines suggest the background, and "Whistler 1859" marks the bottom left corner.
