Head of Trajan
100–200 CE
Location: 103 Roman
Description
Roman portraiture styles evolved in response to the artistic tastes of emperors. Imperial dynasties adopted the visual styles and characteristics of predecessors with whom they wanted to align themselves. This idealized portrait of Trajan emphasizes symbolic connections with Augustus, perhaps the most revered of all the emperors.- "Two Imperial Roman Portraits." The Bulletin of the Cleveland Museum of Art 12, no. 6, (July 1925): 123-124 Mentioned: p. 123; Reproduced: p. 131
