Calvert produced a small body of work---eleven miniature engravings on wood and copper---each devoted to what he conceived to be the Earthly Paradise. These breathtakingly detailed compositions are among the most intense expressions of the Ancients’ artistic sensibility. In the idyllic landscape of The Bride, a nymphlike figure stands upon the bank of a meandering brook.
