Child, from On Death, Part I, Opus XI (Kind, Vom Tode, Erster Teil, Opus XI)
1889
Location: Not on view
Description
In this, the fifth in Klinger’s series On Death, Part One, death occurs in a seemingly peaceful landscape. In a large meadow bordered by woods, a nanny has fallen asleep upon a bench. Beside her is a baby carriage, beneath which lies fallen bedding. On a path in the distance, toward the darkness of the forest, Death leads the child away, dead as a result of its fall.- Nature Sublime: Landscapes from the 19th Century.
