The front and back of a circular bronze medal are featured in relief. On the left, a polar bear stands on an ice floe looking upward beneath the word ARCTIC, beside two birds in flight. The names GREELY, BARTLETT, PEARY, and BYRD circle the rim. On the right, four penguins stand on ice above the word ANTARCTIC, bordered by the names PALMER, WILKES, BYRD, and ELLSWORTH. Raised block lettering and stars punctuate both sides.
