A vertically oriented black ink woodcut depicts a man from the chest up, leaning over a table and facing our right. His eyes are downcast while his hand on our left holds a carving tool. Heavy black shadows mask the right side of his face and torso, contrasting with stark white highlights from our left. Rough gouge marks and hatching create coarse textures across his bowtie, patterned vest, and dark jacket against a fractured background.
