Wedgwood's tricolor jasperware first became popular in the 1770s during a period of fascination with neoclassical decoration. This vase was probably made around 1850 during the period when this type of decoration was revived. The relief medallions depict two versions of the Greek god Apollo, the god of music, next to his harp or lyre.- {{cite web|title=Covered Vase (one of a pair)|url=false|author=Josiah Wedgwood and Sons|year=c. 1850|access-date=14 October 2024|publisher=Cleveland Museum of Art}}
