Held on September 30, the feast day of San Geronimo (Saint Jerome) is celebrated annually with a festival at the Taos Pueblo. Green boughs are carried at sundown on the dance day before the fiesta and during the daylong festivities celebrating the harvest. Baumann had a deep respect for the traditions and customs of Native Americans. He collected pottery and other art produced at various pueblos and often attended ceremonial dances. In 1922 he joined the board of the newly constituted New Mexico Association on Indian Affairs and vigorously protested a bill that was being considered, later recalled, to take land and water rights away from the Pueblos.
