Description

Ryan preferred to print her woodcuts on black paper that she, ever thrifty, repurposed from wrappers for sensitized photographic material. The artist unfolded and ironed these tissue-like sheets to create burnished surfaces that did not absorb the oil paints she used as printing ink. As a result, the colors tended to retain their rich, unadulterated hues.
