Description
On the basis of the style of its decoration, particularly the symbolic trophies of love derived from the repertoire of classic ornament, this ewer and basin can be dated c. 1770. At this period, the output of the Chantilly factory was largely restricted to comparatively utilitarian table wares; pieces such as these are quite rare.
Chantilly Porcelain Factory
Founded in c. 1730 under the patronage of Louis-Henri de Bourbon, Prince de Condé, an impassioned collector of Japanese Arita porcelain, and managed by Ciquaire Cirou until his death in 1751. Only soft-paste porcelain was made.
