Description
This scene conveys ultimate fashionable taste during the reign of Ramesses II in the New Kingdom period (1550–1070 BCE). Chief physician Amenhotep (far right), walks with his family, their arms raised, adoring the gods. Amenhotep wears a pleated sash kilt over a bag tunic weighed down by a broad collar. The woman behind him, presumably his wife Retenutet, wears a complex kalasiris dress, also secured by a collar. Little physical evidence remains of ancient Egyptian ensembles, so depictions of clothing like this relief are the basis for Egyptomania fashion like the Chanel dress in the center of this gallery.- Cleveland Museum of Art, and Martha L.
