Description
In this evocative photograph, Ruggles used an elevated vantage point from the edge of a bluff to create this vista of the rocky northern California coastline. Like the photographer, the viewer becomes a tourist desiring to assimilate the visual richness of this picturesque scene. Ruggles relied on sharp focus and soft, even illumination to minutely render the textures and shapes that make this natural setting so arresting.- American Space: Landscape Photography 1900-1950.
