Goller artificially aged this painting and used a 1500s wooden panel as the support so it would appear centuries older than it is.

Description

This panel was formerly believed to be from a lost altarpiece by German artist Matthias Grünewald (c.1480–1528). Scientific analysis of the pigments revealed that it was painted in the 1900s by Christian Goller, an artist who specialized in works inspired by Medieval and Renaissance painters. Goller’s use of traditional materials and techniques has led to the frequent misattribution of his artworks to various historical artists, including Grünewald, Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472–1533), and Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528). Goller often based his designs on surviving motifs by these artists; this Saint Catherine, for example, was derived from a drawing by Grünewald himself.
