Description

During one of the last trips he made with his Guggenheim fellowship, Weston, his assistant, Charis Wilson, and her brother Leon spent four days in Death Valley photographing clouds. In this composition the low horizon line allowed the cloud formations to counterbalance the distant, angular mountain range. Even with an 8-by-10-inch view camera, not usually associated with quick exposures, Weston was able to capture the fleeting, sometimes ominous shapes as they passed overhead.
