Description

Born in Vienna, where she trained as a classical musician and composer, Lisette Model abandoned music for photography in the 1930s. Immigrating to New York in 1938, she turned her camera on people of all social classes—from the wealthy to the drinkers at the bars of New York City’s Skid Row, the Bowery. Model’s images give the illusion that she got extremely close to her subjects, but she often shot broader scenes then heavily cropped her negatives when printing. Only one of these two elegantly dressed women, who came to a fashion show to see and be seen, has noticed Model and her camera. She does not look pleased.
