Description

Coney Island, at the southern end of Brooklyn, features a public beach, boardwalk, and amusement park that have been popular summer resorts since the 1800s. They offer even those without much money the opportunity to exchange the heat of the asphalt jungle for ocean breezes and rolling surf. Coney Island is easily accessible via subway. Fare from anywhere in New York City was a nickel until 1948, when it went up to a dime. Before home air conditioners became popular in the 1950s, thousands of people would escape their steamy apartments and swarm the beach each summer weekend.
