The artichoke motif was likely inspired by luxury Italian textiles imported to the Ottoman court.
During the 1500s ceramic vessels and tiles produced in Iznik for the Ottoman court in Istanbul represented the finest Islamic ceramics. This dish is a spectacular example with its exuberant design and execution of artichokes. It was made during the reign of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent (1520-66), a high point of Ottoman art.
