Description

The Abstract Expressionists made art intuitively. Their works record the instinctive gestures of the arm as it moves across a canvas or sheet of paper. These dynamic, all-over compositions tend to create a shallow pictorial depth and lack a central focal point, so that the viewer's gaze is continually traveling around the entire composition. These fluid, energetic images have a startling immediacy and seem to expand beyond the edge of the support in all directions. Lee Krasner, married to Jackson Pollock, was at the forefront of these developments.
