Description
Wheeler's work was influenced by the overall patterning and shallow space of Northwest Coast Indian Art, Surrealism, and the whimsical abstractions of Paul Klee. Wheeler was the unofficial leader of a loosely organized group of artists known as the Indian Space Painters whose hard-edged, carefully planned works emphasized the relationship between positive and negative space.- {{cite web|title=Hello Steve: Print Number Twelve: Brooklyn in Q-T Formation|url=false|author=Steve Wheeler|year=1947|access-date=14 December 2025|publisher=Cleveland Museum of Art}}
