Description

After moving from urban New York City to upstate New York, Modica began documenting a working-class family from rural Treadwell as they moved to neighboring towns. Over the span of 15 years, Modica primarily photographed one of the family’s 14 children, Barbara, and her transition from childhood to her premature death due to diabetes. In this humorous image, Modica captured Barbara’s reaction to her younger brother using an impromptu outhouse. Modica’s enigmatic yet playful images of Barbara suggest the vulnerability of adolescence. John L. Severance Fund 1999.28
