Description

Born in New York City, Andrew Borowiec spent most of his early life in Europe and North Africa before permanently settling in the United States. When he drove into the Ohio Valley in 1986, the scene was unlike anything he had ever experienced. Since then, Borowiec has extensively recorded the region’s environment, both natural and constructed, while a professor of art at the University of Akron. Following his conceptual methodology, he photographed the back of this house and yard, which displays signs of rural decay, believing that these areas reveal more about the occupants than their public front entrance. The work also contrasts the potentially favorable aspects of the river—a scenic view seen from a backyard swing and a place for recreation—with the unsightly, ominous power plant that appears in the distance.
