Description
To make a woodcut, ink is applied to the surface of the block and paper is placed on top. When the block is run through the printing press, the pressure transfers the ink to the paper, reversing the design. Baumann’s press, which he purchased in 1917, could accommodate blocks measuring up to 14½ x 18½ inches, limiting the size of his woodcuts; but since smaller prints were more marketable, this turned out not to be a liability.- Chamberlain, Gala, et al., In a Modern Rendering: The Color Woodcuts of Gustave Baumann : a Catalogue Raisonné.
