Description
This is Hewit’s only existing linocut. The design was carved into a block of linoleum, and the surface of the block was inked and printed so that the self-portrait is delineated by a white line (the paper) on a black background. Hewit was born on January 27, 1903, in Conneaut, Ohio, the third child of Jessie Crittenden and Isaac Hewit. In 1906 the family moved to Youngstown, Ohio, where her father opened an insurance agency, the Hewit-Bowman Company. The family roots can be traced back to Steven Hopkins and Myles and Josiah Standish, passengers on the Mayflower in 1620, and the New England Psalter family, who arrived in America in 1798 and moved to Ohio in 1813.- Midwest Modern: The Color Woodcuts of Mabel Hewit.
