Baumann inked blocks carefully, varying the density of ink so that some colors print opaque while others create a speckled effect. By lightly inking a block and printing it over another color, the bottom layer emerges. Notice that rust red is visible beneath the dark blue printed on top of it in the upper background, between two stands of trees, creating a sense of space, light, and air. The Red River Valley in New Mexico, a popular recreation area for skiing and fishing, once had flourishing gold, silver, and copper mines. The Red River itself is aptly named because heavy rains churn up mineral sediments that turn the water a reddish color.
