Description
While living in Indiana, Baumann executed a set of 12 color woodcuts, In the Hills O’ Brown, featuring views in and around Nashville that depict a wholesome, rural America. Like his early prints made in Munich and Chicago, the main elements of the composition are outlined in black and three or four colors are printed in a range of muted grays, blues, browns, and tans. The edition of 100 was printed over seven years. This series was printed on the press of the local newspaper, the Brown County Democrat. The Print Shop depicts the owner checking the galleys, or proofs, while his sons ink and operate the press.- Gustave Baumann: Colorful Cuts.
