Description
From 1913 Baumann executed tempera studies in rich, opaque colors, usually on brown paper, in preparation for making prints. In the case of Corn Dance, he made many changes translating this drawing into a woodcut. The print emphasizes fewer, larger dancers whose costumes have been elaborated with patterning. Subsidiary figures were eliminated and the space was compressed, increasing the size of the mountain and reducing the sky, which had occupied half the background in the tempera. The composition was cut into the blocks in the same direction as the drawing and so is reversed when printed.- Ann Baumann, Santa Rosa, CAFebruary 27, 2006The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH
