Description

In this photograph Laura McPhee captures the complexities of urban India. The influence of global consumer society can be seen in the shop display and signage, but the bright textiles represent traditional Indian dress, described by a phonetic spelling of sari. This photograph comes from a series of images of Kolkata, or Calcutta, that McPhee describes as "the story of past and present, of the evolution from colony to independence and beyond."
