During the past two decades, Steinmetz has documented—with a cinematic sensibility—young people in the American South. His spare, monochromatic images chronicle the fleeting quality of adolescence in a manner in which time appears to have stopped. In this nocturnal scene, he tenderly recorded a girl resting on a parked car and surrounded by a familiar still life of soft drinks and cigarettes. This vignette has been played out continuously since the 1950s in towns all across America and made iconic by Hollywood movies.
