Description

Using an 8-by-10-inch view camera, Soth photographed along the Canadian and American borders of Niagara Falls for his second acclaimed series and book, NIAGARA, making ordinary scenes of places and people extraordinary. Guided by “freedom and lucky coincidences,” he was magnetically drawn, as seen in this portrait of Misty, to striking subjects and evocative details. He was attracted to this stranger whom he met in Canada by her compelling presence, set off by piercing eyes and a brilliant blue bathing cap. Gift of the Contemporary Art Society 2007.235
