Description

The inscription in graphite in the lower right of this page reads, "The bay--Long point light Provincetown 1929." Three other pages in this sketchbook are also inscribed "Provincetown 1929." Hewit made these drawings when she went to Cape Cod to take a class in landscape painting offered by Teachers College, Columbia University. She studied at Teachers College for four summers, earning her MA in the teaching of fine arts in 1932. She had already received her BS in education from the Ohio State University in Columbus in 1926. Hewit never took any printmaking courses, and it is unclear where she learned to make woodcuts, but she began to produce black-and-white prints in about 1930.
