Did You Know?

Throughout the 1990s, Rachel Whiteread filled sketchbooks with drawings of stairs, blacked out postcards of cityscapes leaving only the steps floating in the darkness, and photographed stairs worn down with use.

Description

Known primarily as a sculptor, Rachel Whiteread has long seen drawing as an important part of her three-dimensional work. This sheet relates to the artist's interest in stairs, which developed after she undertook a major project to take casts from the spaces within an entire house. To create this work, she painted with white-out, recalling her use of plaster, to present six floating staircases captured differently in space.
