Description

The Brooklyn Bridge Southwest urban renewal area comprised industrial and commercial structures that had been a center for the leather tanning, printing, and lithography trades. Planning for the project began in the mid-1950s, but the tenants were not relocated until 1964. Businesses that had operated there for the past 70 years were displaced; most managed to survive despite the move. The project was financed by federal, state, and city governments, as well as private developers.
