Kretschmer’s portraits of young women sporting modern clothing and short hairstyles were widely published in magazines as illustrations for short stories and as fashion photographs. In this image, the painter Anette Engelmann poses in an elaborately embroidered Chinese dress. “When it came to the fashion photos,” said Kretschmer, “the fashion was secondary as far as I was concerned—the photos were portraits in which I could play with fabrics and accessories.”- Estate of the Artist; Galerie Priska Pasquer
