Description

The series An Alphabet was a popular and critical success, as was Nicholson’s second project for the publisher William Hienemann, An Almanac of Twelve Sports. Nicholson made woodcuts of traditional British athletics and pastimes, depicting an activity appropriate to the month it illustrated. Critics found that An Almanac of Twelve Sports offered something new—a pleasing combination of modern style and wholesome content and an “Englishness” that was greatly appreciated. The public agreed and the Almanac quickly sold out.
