Description

This drawing is one of relatively few portraits that American artist Edward Hopper created throughout his career. It depicts Dick Magee, a friend of the artist and his neighbor on Cape Cod, where both summered with their wives. Hopper created the drawing as a gesture of friendship for Magee during a 1952 trip, using charcoal to add shadows that emphasize his serious expression.
