Did You Know?

During the golden age of travel by ocean liner, New York's fireboats would sometimes give the ships a water salute as they entered the harbor.

Description

Bruce Davidson’s image brings back the excitement and majesty of the bygone era of a transatlantic crossing by ocean liner. He traveled aboard the luxurious Queen Elizabeth II (QE2) for part of its annual around-the-world cruise in 1998. Through Davidson’s lens, we become passengers entering New York Harbor, welcomed by the Statue of Liberty and saluted by a fire department boat. As exciting as travel can be, returning home may be the best part.
